February Will Be Virtual

February 3rd, 2022 By Calla

Due to current rates of infection we will move our Judges Training on February 12th, 1:30-4:30 and February 26th, 9:00 – 12:00 to a virtual platform. Judges will receive the Zoom link to login when they receive their assignment. While it is likely rates will be significantly lower at the end of Feb. we don’t want to risk our judges becoming ill 2 weeks before the Practice Tournament.

COVID-19 Protocol Update

November 2nd, 2021 By Calla

In late August as Colorado bounced between CDPHE levels Blue (Caution) and Yellow (Concern), we felt we could safely conduct in-person meetings and events. Since then, the Delta variant has proven to be a pesky variant. As circumstances have changed, we have re-evaluated the safety risks associated with holding in-person events for participants from various regions of the state. Given the current community transmission level for most of Colorado is at Orange (High Risk) or worse as defined by the CDPHE, we are postponing the in-person portion of our Coach’s Training for November. First-year coaches should still participate in the online self-paced portion and the live webinar as scheduled. We hope to offer the in-person portion in early December or early January and until then, we encourage coaches to view Odyssey Academy to bridge the gap.

Moving forward and not knowing what the future holds, we have developed how CO Odyssey will conduct events relative to the current CDPHE COVID-19 Status. Please view our COVID-19 Protocol for more information and what to expect as the community transmission level changes.

When we do hold in-person events we expect participants to be truthful and honest as to their current status. Please stay home if sick or self-quarantine if any participants have been exposed to or in close contact (within 6 feet for at least 10 minutes) to a symptomatic person. Please follow all protocols including proper mask wearing, cough & sneeze etiquette, frequent hand sanitizing and social distancing. We will verify the host facility has followed CDPHE guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting along with providing hand sanitizer, and disinfecting materials prior to use. As an organization, our goal is to safely return to in-person events by following these guidelines. We don’t want to contribute to the problem, we want to be part of the solution.

We know kids benefit more from this program when conducted in person. While we creatively problem solved a virtual season for 2020, it is not a long term solution. Our goal this year is to safely return to in person events so kids can experience some sort of normalcy after a year and a half of being resilient learners. Safety is our number one concern and we want to ensure we do our part to prevent the spread of this virus. Therefore and until the Level of Community Transmission decreases, we will have the following standards for in person events:

  • Adhere to your local school district policies
  • Participants who are eligible for the vaccine must be vaccinated for the COVID virus OR have a negative COVID test in the last 72 hours
  • Participants will wear masks over their mouth and nose at all times
  • Participants will social distance whenever possible
  • Areas, surfaces and materials will be sanitized before and after use
  • If you are experiencing symptoms related to COVID 19 (or any infectious disease), do not participate till you are symptom free for 24 hours.

Hopefully these preventive measures will be short-lived. These policies will be on the honor system and if a case is traced back to an in person Odyssey of the Mind event, we will be requesting documentation and assisting with any contact tracing. We all want to return to normal and we appreciate our coaches, team members, and volunteers being part of the solution.

2020-2021 Season

June 4th, 2020 By Calla

Soon we will be starting discussions within our leadership team with regards to the 2020-2021 season and alternative plans. While we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we do recognize the need to start developing a Plan B (partial virtual) season and a Plan C (100% virtual) season. We want to make sure we have identified the what, how, where and who to operate in a partial or 100% virtual environment. If there is any group well prepared to do this, it is everyone in Odyssey of the Mind because we all know creative problem solving is a journey, not a destination.

CO Odyssey Season Coming To A Close

March 20th, 2020 By Calla

Hi Coaches, Coordinators, Judges & Volunteers,

With a heavy heart we are making the decision to cancel the rest of the season but believe it is the right decision given all our families are dealing with now and for the foreseeable future. Tracy, Paula, Kathy and I have reviewed the results of the survey, and while many want to continue the season if it is safe, the ability to hold an in person tournament on April 25th, the week kids are scheduled to return to in person classes, would only add more strain on coaches, teams, judges and volunteers at a time when they have more important priorities. The option of a video or live streaming was discussed however, with Governor Polis instructions to limit group gatherings to less than 10 and the burden this places on families, judges and our volunteer leadership team to figure it all out was more than I wanted to put on people. My concern for Odyssey and the kid’s experience is outweighed by concern and empathy for our families and all they are burdened with during this time.

If Worlds is held, we will figure out a way to move those teams forward if we have more teams interested in participating than is allowed by CCI. In the meantime, please check out our Facebook page as we are posting daily online resources, activities, virtual field trip opportunities, and more during this at home time period.

Also, we would like to plan a creativity festival sometime this summer with areas for performances, spontaneous problems, giant jenga, bbq and whatever else our creative problem solving brains can imagine. For now, thanks for your patience, support, and kind words during this ever changing time. Stay well and I know we will get through this together with teamwork and creative problem solving.

Response To New CDC Recommendations

March 16th, 2020 By Calla

Hello Coaches, Coordinators, Judges & Volunteers,

Given the recent CDC recommendation to ban all events of 50 or more people for 8 weeks except for businesses, K-12 and higher learning, Tracy, Paula, Kathy and I will be discussing back up plans to back up plans to back up plans. We can all appreciate this is an ever changing situation. Please know we are staying on top of these updates and need time to reevaluate, develop new contingency plans, and work with the Odyssey of the Mind main office. We will communicate with you all as soon as decisions have been made and we are trying to do this as quickly as possible when new directives are issued.

Keep being creative problem solvers, practice social distancing and suspend practices for the immediate future, wash your hands often, sneeze/cough into your elbow, and stay away from others if not feeling well.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigate a new and quickly evolving situation. We wish you and your families good health during this time.
