Soon we will be starting discussions within our leadership team with regards to the 2020-2021 season and alternative plans. While we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we do recognize the need to start developing a Plan B (partial virtual) season and a Plan C (100% virtual) season. We want to make sure we have identified the what, how, where and who to operate in a partial or 100% virtual environment. If there is any group well prepared to do this, it is everyone in Odyssey of the Mind because we all know creative problem solving is a journey, not a destination.
Colorado Odyssey will be on Summer Break till Aug. 1st and we will be checking email periodically during this time. In the meantime, check out the Long Term Problem Synopsis for next year under our Quick Links and fun & interesting posts on our Facebook page over the summer. We look forward to seeing coaches, coordinators and teams in the fall.
Hi Coaches, Coordinators, Judges & Volunteers,
With a heavy heart we are making the decision to cancel the rest of the season but believe it is the right decision given all our families are dealing with now and for the foreseeable future. Tracy, Paula, Kathy and I have reviewed the results of the survey, and while many want to continue the season if it is safe, the ability to hold an in person tournament on April 25th, the week kids are scheduled to return to in person classes, would only add more strain on coaches, teams, judges and volunteers at a time when they have more important priorities. The option of a video or live streaming was discussed however, with Governor Polis instructions to limit group gatherings to less than 10 and the burden this places on families, judges and our volunteer leadership team to figure it all out was more than I wanted to put on people. My concern for Odyssey and the kid’s experience is outweighed by concern and empathy for our families and all they are burdened with during this time.
If Worlds is held, we will figure out a way to move those teams forward if we have more teams interested in participating than is allowed by CCI. In the meantime, please check out our Facebook page as we are posting daily online resources, activities, virtual field trip opportunities, and more during this at home time period.
Also, we would like to plan a creativity festival sometime this summer with areas for performances, spontaneous problems, giant jenga, bbq and whatever else our creative problem solving brains can imagine. For now, thanks for your patience, support, and kind words during this ever changing time. Stay well and I know we will get through this together with teamwork and creative problem solving.
Hello Coaches, Coordinators, Judges & Volunteers,
Given the recent CDC recommendation to ban all events of 50 or more people for 8 weeks except for businesses, K-12 and higher learning, Tracy, Paula, Kathy and I will be discussing back up plans to back up plans to back up plans. We can all appreciate this is an ever changing situation. Please know we are staying on top of these updates and need time to reevaluate, develop new contingency plans, and work with the Odyssey of the Mind main office. We will communicate with you all as soon as decisions have been made and we are trying to do this as quickly as possible when new directives are issued.
Keep being creative problem solvers, practice social distancing and suspend practices for the immediate future, wash your hands often, sneeze/cough into your elbow, and stay away from others if not feeling well.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigate a new and quickly evolving situation. We wish you and your families good health during this time.
State Association Director
We want to keep you up to date regarding the State Tournament currently scheduled for Saturday, April 4th. We (Tracy, Paula, Kathy & I) will decide no later than next Friday so we are outside the 14-day incubation period. There will be several factors that will go into the decision:
* Guidance from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment
* School districts return to in person classes. At this time most districts have stated they will be returning March 30, DPS is the only one extending to April 6th because of their previously scheduled spring break. Obviously, this is subject to change.
* School district permission to use school facilities for large gatherings. CHSAA has currently prohibited all spring sports events and practices till April 6th.
* Number of new cases in CO – increasing, decreasing or stabilizing
We do have a backup date of April 25th in Ft. Collins, but if we can go on April 4th, we will so teams have as much time as possible to fundraise for World Finals.
Speaking of World Finals, we would like to update you about the Odyssey of the Mind 2020 World Finals at Iowa State University. Planning is still underway at Odyssey HQ. The staff of Iowa State University are hard at work ensuring the cleanest, safest campus environment possible. They are extending their Spring break to do this. Meanwhile, the Odyssey HQ staff is diligently monitoring the situation pertaining to COVID-19. We understand that there is a lot of fear surrounding the health and safety of everyone who participates in Odyssey tournaments, whether they are team members, coaches, or volunteers. We remain hopeful that the mitigation plans put in place by organizations and governments around the world will enable safe gatherings and travel for late May. Please check the CCI’s Healthcare Update page for updated information.
Certainly, we are not going to do anything that would put kids and adults in harm’s way. The COVID-19 situation is changing constantly, and please know Tracy, Paula, Kathy & I are monitoring the situation and we’ll keep you informed with regards to the State Tournament and World Finals as we learn more and decisions are made.
Colorado Odyssey of the Mind
It is with great sadness for the kids that we will cancel our regional tournaments this weekend, March 14th. These teams will be advanced to the State Tournament on April 4th. We are inquiring about facility availability on Saturdays and Sundays beyond April 4th through May 3rd, except April 12th (Easter Sunday), should the situation not be improved by then.
It is imperative that everyone do their part to minimize the spread of this virus including following the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Preventing COVID-19 Spread in Communities and Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) Public Health Recommendations.
We will keep you informed via email, our Colorado Odyssey website and Facebook going forward. Thank you for your patience, concerns and support as we evaluated the quickly evolving situation and do what is in the best interest of the kids, families and teams.
Also, please know at this time, World Finals is still a go at the end of May. Keep up to date via the Odyssey of the Mind website Health Care Update page
Colorado Odyssey of the Mind will follow the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and school districts’ lead in which we hold tournaments with regards to any quarantines, closures, or other health precautions needed. Our focus is always to ensure the safety of teams, coaches, volunteers, and attendees. We will continue our practices of disinfecting high-touch surfaces and other areas within tournament facilities and providing prevention supplies at our events. As the situation evolves, we will adapt and communicate any changes to coaches, school coordinators, judges and volunteers, as well as our volunteer leadership team.
In addition to the CDPHE measures listed below, we would like to recommend following these guidelines to help protect everyone, including those who attend our tournaments:
If you are considered to be in a high-risk category, we ask that you make an informed decision regarding event attendance. If you are a judge or volunteer, the team will need to find a replacement.
If you have traveled outside of the U.S. or to a highly infected state (WA, CA, NY) within the past two weeks, we ask that you stay home.
If you have been exposed to anyone with a fever in the past week, please stay home.
Health Department Coronavirus Information
Please review the information from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment and follow their prevention measures. At this time of year, there are many causes of respiratory illnesses, including the common cold and influenza. Symptoms of coronavirus infection include fever, cough and/or shortness of breath. Symptoms usually appear within two to 14 days after being exposed to the virus.
Take Everyday Actions To Protect Yourself And Those You Love
- There are effective ways to reduce the risk to yourself and the people you care about.
- Stay home if you’re sick, and keep your children home if they are sick.
- Frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash, or use your inner elbow or sleeve.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Clean surfaces in your home, and personal items such as cell phones, using regular household products.
- Be calm and prepared.
- People who are not sick do not need face masks to protect themselves from respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. Ill people should wear a mask to protect family members or in any scenario where needed to prevent the spread of germs.
